Welcome to our world of Golden Retrievers!
We were turned on to Goldens nearly 19 years ago when a friend referred us to a
breeder in Berthoud, CO who raised and trained Golden retrievers for hunting and
field trials. After having terrible dog experiences with huskies, I was leery of
another large breed. Then “Foxy” came into our life. She was a one year old
female Golden from Quartermoon kennels. We were only looking for a family pet
but Foxy came to us with a year of formal training and it opened our eyes to how
wonderful and smart golden retrievers truly are. She began training us to be
good dog owners.
It wasn’t until we had her for 3 years that a friend suggested we go to a
hunting preserve and see if Foxy had any hunting abilities. That Sunday Foxy
truly showed us that not only was she a great family companion but her natural
hunting instincts surfaced. The world of bird hunting began to consume my life.
Foxy taught me how to hunt. She lived to be 13 years old and we enjoyed every
minute of it.
After Foxy, we began the puppy process with another Golden from Quartermoon.
Buster was to be my first true training experience. Wow! For 6 solid months I
worked with Erica Christensen as my coach and trainer. Buster turned into one of
the finest hunters I had ever been around. My love affair with Goldens lead me
to acquire a second Golden girl by the name of Lizzie. She was the smallest girl
of the litter but Erica swore she was the birdiest pup of the group. She was right!
Lizzie became the darling of the field. Not only did she hunt but I began
working her in hunt tests. By now my wife thought I was turning into a Golden
retriever!
The love affair has taken a whole new dimension. Lizzie was such a joy that I
began to toy with the idea of breeding her. While looking for a stud dog, I
connected with a breeder in Wisconsin, Wendy Todd, who was interested in selling
a competition male that had also been a stud dog for her. It must have been in
the stars since his background had a common ancestry with the Quartermoon line.
I couldn’t pass up the opportunity so I acquired “Comet” in March of 2005. Comet
received a qualifying pass at his first hunt test. I knew I had a great Golden
team at that point. Training and raising Goldens would be a passion that I could
take me into my golden years.
It has taken nearly 20 years to get to this point but I look forward to giving
to others the joy of being a Golden owner that I have experienced. I will
continue to train and hunt my Goldens as long as I am able. They are not only a
joy to hunt with but they are always a part of our family. Now is the time to
pass my experiences to others. My wife and I have started the quest to breed the
finest line of Golden retrievers under the name “Golden Bee Retrievers”.
This is our story and we invite you to join our Golden family for a truly
rewarding Golden adventure!
